3 Things You Should Be Doing Right Now To Protect Your Trees

As an expert arborist, I can tell you this is one of the most important times of year to care for your trees. Here’s what every homeowner or property manager should be doing right now to keep trees healthy and thriving:

1. Inspect for Winter Damage and Pests

Start with a full inspection. Look for cracked limbs, dead branches, or signs of disease and pests (like oozing sap, holes in bark, or discolored leaves). Early detection is key—especially for issues like emerald ash borer or fungal infections that spread fast.

2. Mulch and Water Properly

Apply 2–4 inches of mulch around the base of your tree, but keep it away from the trunk to avoid rot. Mulch helps retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Also, make sure your trees are getting deep waterings during dry spells—especially newly planted ones.

3. Prune for Shape and Safety

Prune away any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to promote airflow and healthy growth. Now’s also the time to remove low-hanging limbs or branches too close to structures or walkways. Just avoid heavy pruning of oaks or elms to prevent disease spread.

Taking these three steps now sets your trees up for a strong, healthy growing season. Want help identifying issues or pruning safely? Always consider consulting a certified arborist.
