Want Healthy & Strong Trees? Avoid These 3 Common Mistakes People Make With Tree Care

As an expert arborist, I see these same mistakes over and over—and while they may seem small, they can seriously impact a tree’s health and lifespan.

1. Overmulching (“Mulch Volcanoes”)

Piling mulch high against the trunk suffocates roots, traps moisture, and invites rot and pests.
Fix: Apply 2–3 inches of mulch in a wide ring around the tree, but keep it pulled back from the trunk like a donut, not a volcano.

2. Improper Pruning

Topping trees (cutting off the top) or making random cuts can stress the tree, encourage weak growth, and leave it vulnerable to disease.
Fix: Always prune with a purpose—remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches—and hire a certified arborist for large or mature trees.

3. Watering Too Much or Too Little

Too much water drowns roots; too little causes stress, especially in young trees.
Fix: Water deeply and infrequently. Established trees need a good soak during dry spells, but not daily watering.

Avoiding these mistakes can make the difference between a struggling tree and a thriving one. When in doubt, consult an arborist—you’ll save time, money, and the life of your tree.
